How Did I Travel Like That?
I have taken 19 plane rides since July 15th. It sounds crazy even to me. I’ve had to pack lightly, get over my fears and share my embarrassments! Eek! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some of the most amazing, kind people ever! I’ve been to Atlanta, Barcelona, Dublin, Madrid, Amsterdam, London, Zurich, Chur, Rome and Washington DC. Whew!
No, I’m not independently wealthy… at least not in the monetary sense, but I am in rich in friendship! My best friend is a flight attendant and in 2019, she allowed me to have her companion pass. This means that I can list on any flight and fly standby at her seniority level. For each trip, I started in Minneapolis, flew to Atlanta, and then off to the destination. Then after a short day of touring, it was back on the plane to Atlanta, and then back to Minneapolis. Crazy. Exhausting. And worth every single minute to spend time with my friend, and to see some beautiful places. To say that this has been the best summer of my life would be an understatement. I LOVE to travel!
But what about my commitments here at home? I have my OLMA Life Coaching business, The Courage Club that I lead, another business called, Be My Guest Loft, (a furnished apartment that I rent as a lodging space). I sit on the Chamber of Commerce board of directors, The Paradise Center for the Arts board of directors, and the Tourism Commission for my city. I am also a distributor for essential oils and CBD, and I officiate weddings! Whew! It wasn’t always easy, I had to prioritize and there were things I missed, but I made it work because travel is important to me.
The way I made it work was by being super organized, and by working smarter, not harder. I did as much as I could before I left, and then again when I was back at home for a few days in between trips. I also asked for help. I took my computer with me and I stayed up to date on pending reservations, client requests, and minutes from board meetings, weighing in via email. I utilized the help of a young woman with a cleaning business to help to turn over the loft on the one occasion that I wasn’t back in town to do it myself. I wrote blog posts, Tuesday emails, and social media posts during my down time in the airports. But probably the one thing that has helped me the most was my virtual assistant. Between her expertise and platforms like Planoly that assist with posting scheduled content, I was able to stay on top of my businesses.
If you love to travel as much as I do, but think that you just can’t take the time away from your home or career, you need to know that the person you become after time away from your normal life, experiencing new places and people, will delight you. You will come back more confident, more enlightened and with a greater appreciation for your regular life.
And most certainly you will realize what a small world we live in, and how wonderful it is to see as much of it as you can!
