How Much Does a Life Coach Charge, and is it Worth it?

This is a question that I get asked almost right away when I start to talk with someone about what I do.  If someone is interested in using my services, they want to make sure that the investment is worth it for them.  I understand this completely, and that’s why I need to tell you about my experience hiring my life coach.

Many years ago, I was going through a really difficult time in my life.  I knew something was missing, but I just couldn’t figure out how to fix it.  I felt like my life was on autopilot.  I didn’t feel energized by anything, in fact, I felt really bored with almost everything.  I was stuck.  I was frustrated at being almost 50 and not having my life figured out, and I was certain that without help, I’d never get to a place of fulfillment.  I started reading and listening to self-help books, I asked my friends and family about what I should do, and none of it helped.  Well, actually it did help because it led me to search the internet for a life coach.  No one that I knew had ever used a life coach and so I didn’t know much about how it worked.  I looked at a few coach’s websites and then I found one that seemed right.  I like her.  It felt like she knew exactly what I was feeling, and so I filled out her request for more information and waited for a response.

To my surprise, the response came within a few minutes.  I sent an email responding to the questions and we set up a time to talk over the phone to get to know one another.  My life coach only works with people that she feels a connection to, and so this was kind of a telephone interview for both of us.  I was thrilled when she said that she would take me as a client and we set up a schedule for the next three months of calls.  It was only AFTER we had done all of this that she asked me about payment and I realized that I didn’t even know how much she charged!  When she told me her rates, I was a little bit shocked, but I knew that I needed her.  And to be honest, I would have paid twice the amount she charged me in order to have the results that I did.  With her help, I figured out very quickly the direction I wanted to go in, and I made a plan to get there.  She didn’t do this for me… she didn’t tell me what to do… she asked lots of questions and she supported me and encouraged me and guided me.  She helped me with the logistics of creating my desires, but she also helped me with the mindset work that has benefited me long past our working together.

You see, at that point of my life, I wasn’t thinking about the cost of paying a life coach.  I was thinking about the cost of NOT paying a life coach.  I knew that without her, I was going to be stuck in my funk for a long time.  I also knew that with her guidance, support and her “helicopter view” of my life, I could quickly get out of my funk and start living with purpose, excitement and direction!

We all are willing to pay for the things that we value.  People who have a lot of money spend their money on things that they value, but so do people who don’t have a lot of money.  Think about it the next time you are making a purchase of something that you don’t need in order to live.  The reason you are buying that thing is because you value what it will give to you.  Whether that is some kind of immediate pleasure like ice cream, or status like a Gucci purse, or even the help of a life coach.  When you really want or need something, the value is evident to you.

Now the answer to the burning question… How much does a life coach charge?  Well, the answer is that every life coach is different.  I know a woman who paid a life coach over $10,ooo to help her for six months to launch her business and she swears it is the best money she has ever invested in herself.  I also know life coaches who do a lot of pro bono work for women’s shelters and other people down on their luck.  There are also coaches who focus more on group coaching like Masterminds, and others who do only 1:1 coaching.  The important part is that you find a coach that you click with.  Someone you trust and someone who has a track record of happy past clients.  When you are hiring a life coach you are hiring someone to help you with your most important asset… YOU!  And that is an investment that has the most value of all.
